Title IX: Equal Access on the Playing Field and in the Classroom October 29, 2003 Every classroom and athlete is directly affected by equal access to educational opportunities guaranteed under Title IX. Two educators well versed in issues related to Title IX will be the featured presenters on a web cast entitled Title IX: Equal Access on the Playing Field and in the Classroom. Cary Groth, Athletic Director at Northern Illinois University and member of the Secretary of Education???s Commission on Opportunities in Athletics, will discuss Title IX mandates and common misunderstandings of these mandates as they apply to athletics. She will also discuss the political history of Title IX, related court cases, and the recent reaffirmation of Title IX. Suzanne Pryga, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Prairie State College and author of Fairness: A Guide to Gender Equity in Illinois Schools, will discuss classroom implications of Title IX and of Illinois Sex Equity Rules. She will also discuss methods for improving equity in education.
